Trust and Desire

What do you trust?  What do you desire?  Do you know why?  Is it because of your worldly beliefs?  Is it because you want what others have? Why is that?  Today, while reading my bible, I came across Psalm 37.

From the NIV:

1 Do not fret because of those who are evil
or be envious of those who do wrong;

2 for like the grass they will soon wither,
like green plants they will soon die away.

3 Trust in the Lord and do good;
dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.

4 Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Do not fret…

fret

   [fret]  Show IPA verb, fret·ted, fret·ting, noun

verb (used without object)

1. to feel or express worry, annoyance, discontent, or the like: Fretting about the lost ring isn’t going to help.
2. to cause corrosion; gnaw into something: acids that fret at the strongest metals.
3. to make a way by gnawing, corrosion, wearing away, etc.: The river frets at its banks until a new channel is formed.
4. to become eaten, worn, or corroded (often followed by away): Limestone slowly frets away under pounding by the wind and rain.
5. to move in agitation or commotion, as water: water fretting over the stones of a brook.

So, do not worry, be discontent, because of those that are evil. As well, do not envious of those that do wrong.  I feel I do ok on that last one.  I don’t envy too many and typically, what I envy are those that really know the bible.  The first part, is a little more difficult for me.  I can’t help but worry about those that do evil, are evil.  I am greatly saddened by the actions, but I do just shut my mouth about it as it is not up to me to judge, or tell them how to live their lives.

2 for like the grass they will soon wither,
like green plants they will soon die away.

I touched on this a little yesterday.  By relying on worldly desires, and wanting those, you will wither away, as you can’t keep up with it constantly, it will wear you out and make you sick.

3 Trust in the Lord and do good;
dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.

But if we trust in the Lord, and do good (keep in mind, there is only one that is good, but we can do our best) we will dwell in the land and enjoy His safe pasture.  His safe haven.

4 Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.

If we take delight, enjoyment, in the Lord, he will give us the desires of our heart.  How exciting is that? We’ll be given the desires of our heart.  Now, saying that, I need to advise, that when you take delight in the Lord, the desires of your heart will change.  You won’t have the same desires as you do now.  It’s not a bad thing, it’s actually a great thing.  Relax, and enjoy it.  Trust me, it’s worth it.
