Paying attention

It’s easy to get comfortable in your life and not pay attention to what’s going on around you.  We see it all the time, and then when something major happens, we’re shocked, amazed, disappointed, and many times angry.  Look at this past week with the whole SOPA/PIPA stuff.  So, we need to pay attention.  But that’s not all, we need to pay attention to what to everything, not just certain things.  Paul’s letter to the Hebrews (yes, that is debatable, so let’s say, in the letter to the Hebrews in the New Testament) we are given a warning to pay attention.

Hebrews 2

   1Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

   2For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;

   3How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

   4God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

The dreaded “Therefore” which mean, according to dictionary.com:

there·fore

[thair-fawr, -fohr]  Show IPA

adverb

in consequence of that; as a result; consequently: I think;therefore I am.
So, therefore, as a result of, we ought to, have a moral obligation to, give more earnest, serious, careful attention to the thing that we have heard.  In short, PAY ATTENTION. 😀  Lest, meaning for fear that, we should let them slip.  Meaning, we should pay attention so that we don’t forget.
  For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast.”  First part is pretty self explanatory, meaning if what the angels have said.  Stedfast, means unwavering or determined in purpose. So, what the angels spoke was unwavering, determined in purpose.  “And every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;”  Transgression refers to wrong doing, as does disobedience.  Recompence, according to dictionary.com:

rec·om·pense

[rek-uhm-pens]  Show IPA verb, -pensed, -pens·ing, noun

verb (used with object)

1. to repay; remunerate; reward, as for service, aid, etc.
2. to pay or give compensation for; make restitution or requital for (damage, injury, or the like).
So, this is saying that our every wrong doing, will get its due reward.  Reward is not always good folks.  Sometimes, you are rewarded in the negative.  Some people call this karma.  that’s a whole different post however.
“How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation;”  The author questioning if we neglect the great salvation that has been granted to us, how could we possibly escape this negative reward? “which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;”  That which was first spoken by the Lord, God, was confirmed by those that heard Him speak.  Who heard him speak?  Adam, Abram/Abraham, Moses, etc.  In the new testament, those that were present when Jesus was baptized, for God actually said when John the Baptist baptized Jesus in the Jordan River
Matthew 3:16-17

16And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

   17And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

That’s pretty clear.  First hand witnesses, gotta love it.

Going back to the original set of verses:  4God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

God bearing/giving them witness, not just with signs, but with wonders, and divers.  Let’s clarify this meaning:

di·vers

[dahy-verz]  Show IPA

adjective

1. several; various; sundry: divers articles.

So, with several, various miracles, and with gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to His will.  Because it is all according to His will.  Please note that the question mark at the end isn’t a question for the last part, it’s hypothetical as the full sentence is both verse 3 and 4.  Read it together and you can see what I mean:

3How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

   4God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

Rhetorical – These verses, in a nutshell ask how is it possible that we can escape his great salvation, a salvation which was spoken by the Lord, first hand, and showed these witnesses through signs and wonders, and various miracles, and with gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to His will.    The answer is, we can’t escape.  We must remember the warning to pay attention and to heed what he has said.

God bless!
